PewDiePie Says OpenAI Banned Him Twice While Building His "Uncensored" AI
PewDiePie has released Ajax, a fine-tuned Qwen3.5-9B AI model designed for local deployment and autonomous tasks within his self-hosted Odysseus workspace. The model is described as "uncensored" by its creator, who also reported being twice suspended by OpenAI for activities related to model distillation during development.
Ajax is presented as a locally deployable, 9-billion-parameter model intended for web, email, and calendar assistance. Its creator defines "uncensored" as suppressing refusals while retaining model intelligence, a description that is not based on independent safety evaluations. At launch, the project lacked a public model card, published benchmarks, or publicly available weights, making its performance and safety claims difficult to assess.
The model's development involved using OpenAI models for generating seed training data, including chain-of-thought outputs from OpenAI's Sol model. This activity led to account deactivations from OpenAI, which cited "adversarial distillation", the unauthorized use of one model's outputs to train or improve another. This incident coincides with OpenAI's broader enforcement efforts against similar activities, though the specific parties and circumstances differ from other reported campaigns.
The release of Ajax highlights a growing trend towards personal, self-hosted AI agents, leveraging open-weight models like Qwen that support local deployment. While the concept of local AI agents is not new, PewDiePie's involvement brings this approach to a mainstream audience. However, without full documentation and public weights, Ajax's current status as a work-in-progress means it cannot be evaluated against established open-weight models.
