Peak XV ups Surge seed investment ceiling to $5M, unveils 18-startup cohort
Peak XV Partners, a major VC firm with over $10 billion in assets under management, has increased its seed-stage investments through its Surge platform. The firm will now invest up to $5 million per company, up from $3 million previously. Peak XV invested more than $50 million across its new Surge 12 cohort of 18 startups. This cohort has collectively raised over $90 million in seed funding. Thirteen of these startups target global markets, though more than half are based in India.
Peak XV’s decision to raise its Surge investment ceiling to $5 million per company reflects a hardening seed market. Founders now need more capital to reach Series A. This is particularly true for deeptech, which often demands higher initial investment. The firm’s median investment per company has also increased, though the specific figure is not disclosed. This trend pushes seed rounds closer to traditional Series A amounts.
Indian startups specifically benefit from larger initial capital. More than half of Surge 12’s companies are based in India. However, only five of these 18 startups focus solely on the Indian market. The remaining 13 target global customers. This shows a clear divergence between where tech is built and where its market lies.
The thing to watch is how this impacts later-stage funding for these companies. Peak XV states it remains an investor through later rounds. This suggests a longer-term commitment to its portfolio. The test for Surge 12 is whether its companies can secure Series A rounds at higher valuations after receiving larger seed checks.
