OpenAI Wanted an iPhone Halo Effect — It Got a Ghost Town
OpenAI’s ChatGPT integration into Apple Intelligence, launched in late 2024, failed to generate the expected “halo effect” or subscription growth. Court filings from OpenAI’s litigation with xAI reveal the AI giant’s disappointment over the deal. Apple and OpenAI had agreed to no direct capital exchange, with OpenAI seeking user exposure and Apple offering a privacy-first integration. This underperformance has fueled rising tensions and trade secret litigation between the two companies.
OpenAI's own failure to capitalize on a major distribution channel, not Apple's alleged jilting, is the core issue here. OpenAI expected a significant "halo effect" and more subscriptions from its iOS 18.2 integration. This outcome points to a deeper challenge for large language models: distribution alone does not guarantee user engagement or revenue conversion. The lack of direct payment from Apple also shows OpenAI's overestimation of brand association value.
For Asia, this reflects a critical lesson for AI startups seeking global reach. Many Asian AI firms eye partnerships with major device makers for user acquisition. This OpenAI experience shows that even a direct integration with a platform like iOS does not automatically translate into user adoption or monetization. Asian AI developers must focus on differentiated utility, not just access, to drive real value for users beyond a basic extension.
The thing to watch is how Asian mobile device manufacturers, like Samsung or Xiaomi, approach AI integration in their own ecosystems. If they see similar low engagement from third-party AI extensions, they will accelerate in-house model development. This would further fragment the global AI landscape, making it harder for any single model to dominate across devices by 2027.
