OpenAI turns ChatGPT into an app discovery and distribution platform
OpenAI announced new features at its Dev Day, including app suggestions within ChatGPT, an extensions architecture, a "Sign in with ChatGPT" identity layer, and autonomous agents called Dots. The company reported 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users and introduced an enterprise app marketplace with over 30 partners.
OpenAI's announcements indicate a strategic shift to position ChatGPT as a comprehensive distribution channel for software. By integrating app suggestions, an extensions architecture for interactive panels, and a universal sign-in, the company aims to facilitate app discovery and usage directly within the chatbot interface. This could reduce the friction users face in finding and adopting new tools, potentially expanding how software reaches its audience.
The introduction of autonomous agents, called Dots, further shifts the user-software dynamic. These agents are designed to execute tasks based on user descriptions, connecting to OpenAI's app ecosystem and performing background research. This suggests a future where software interaction is less about active searching for a tool and more about agent-driven recommendations and actions, with user approval for proactive steps.
While OpenAI is building the operational infrastructure for an app economy, encompassing discovery, distribution, identity, and a review process, a significant piece remains unaddressed: monetization. The company did not announce a billing or revenue-sharing system comparable to traditional app stores. This omission means that while developers gain a new route to customers, the financial model for this new channel is still undefined, distinguishing it from existing app store structures.
