Nvidia to provide up to US$105 billion guarantee for OpenAI’s Ohio data centre
Nvidia is making a substantial commitment to OpenAI’s infrastructure, agreeing to provide a guarantee of up to US$105 billion. This guarantee will facilitate OpenAI’s lease of a large data center in Ohio, a facility under development by SoftBank-backed SB Energy. In addition to this significant financial backing, Nvidia will also invest US$1.5 billion directly into SB Energy. This move follows earlier investments totaling US$1 billion from OpenAI and SoftBank aimed at expanding data center capabilities, highlighting a concerted effort to scale AI infrastructure.
Nvidia’s massive financial guarantee for OpenAI’s data center, coupled with its direct investment in SoftBank-backed SB Energy, signals a deepening strategic alliance between key players in the global AI ecosystem. While the data center is located in Ohio, the involvement of SoftBank, a major Japanese conglomerate, underscores the interconnectedness of global tech infrastructure development. This collaboration highlights the critical role of Asian capital and strategic partnerships in fueling the immense computational demands of advanced AI. It also reflects a broader trend where chipmakers are moving beyond mere component supply to become integral infrastructure financiers and partners in the AI value chain.
For Asia, this development is significant. SoftBank’s involvement through SB Energy demonstrates how Asian investors are actively shaping the global AI landscape, not just as consumers or developers of AI, but as enablers of its foundational infrastructure. It also sets a precedent for how future large-scale AI projects, requiring unprecedented capital and resources, might be financed and executed through international consortia. The scale of Nvidia’s commitment further solidifies its position as a central pillar in the AI revolution, influencing market dynamics and investment flows globally, including within Asia’s burgeoning AI sector.
