[News] Ouster Raises the Bar on High-Altitude Drone Mapping with The World’s First Native Color Lidar and 2x Accuracy & Precision Breakthrough on REV8 OS1 Max
Ouster announced surging customer momentum for its Rev8 OS1 Max native color digital lidar. The sensor offers 256 channels of 3D range data and 48-bit native color. It achieves 0.25 cm 1 sigma precision and 1.25 cm accuracy, doubling the previous Rev7 generation. The Rev8 OS1 Max is designed for high-altitude drone mapping in utility, infrastructure, and defense applications.
Ouster's Rev8 OS1 Max lidar offers a 2x improvement in precision and accuracy over its predecessor. This allows drones to map at higher altitudes, covering more ground per flight. The sensor's native 48-bit color and 256 vertical channels maintain detail on thin objects like power lines, even at 200 meters of range. This reduces the number of passes needed for corridor inspections.
The immediate impact for Asia is in infrastructure and defense. Companies managing extensive power grids or critical infrastructure, particularly in Southeast Asia, can deploy these drones more efficiently. The Build America, Buy America Act (BABA) compliance, while US-focused, could push Asian integrators to seek similar domestic sourcing options for their own government contracts. This creates an opportunity for local lidar and drone manufacturers.
The key thing to watch is the adoption rate among major Asian drone OEMs and payload integrators. Flyability is already evaluating Ouster's Rev8 OS0 lidar for confined-space inspection. If other regional players like DJI or Autel Robotics integrate this technology, it could significantly accelerate its deployment across Asia by late 2027. This would redefine drone mapping standards for the region.
