NCB Launches VietQR Global for Cross-Border QR Payments in Vietnam
National Citizen Commercial Joint Stock Bank (NCB) has launched VietQR Global, a new cross-border QR payment service in Vietnam. This initiative allows international travelers to pay local merchants by scanning QR codes using their home country’s banking apps or digital wallets. Initially supporting payment providers from China (Alipay, UnionPay), South Korea (GLN, Hana Financial Group, Naver Pay), Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, NCB plans to expand coverage to Singapore, Japan, India, and Malaysia. The service is already accepted at major tourist destinations, including Sun World entertainment venues, Sun Group hotels, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, and various retail merchants, streamlining transactions for visitors.
NCB’s launch of VietQR Global marks a significant step in enhancing digital payment interoperability within Southeast Asia and beyond. By enabling cross-border QR payments, Vietnam is positioning itself as a more convenient destination for international tourists, particularly those from key Asian markets like China and South Korea, where QR payments are deeply embedded in daily commerce. This move not only simplifies transactions for travelers but also integrates Vietnamese merchants into a broader regional digital economy, potentially boosting tourism revenue and local business activity.
The expansion plans to include Singapore, Japan, India, and Malaysia reflect a strategic vision to create a seamless payment corridor across major Asian economies. This trend towards regional payment integration, often driven by QR code technology, is a critical development for fostering greater economic connectivity and digital transformation in Asia. It underscores the growing importance of localized digital payment solutions that cater to the diverse preferences and existing financial infrastructures of different countries, ultimately contributing to a more interconnected and efficient regional financial ecosystem.
