Musk turns to rival Anthropic to power Grok
Elon Musk’s xAI will use rival Anthropic’s Claude Opus AI models, along with Midjourney and Suno, to power parts of Grok. Musk stated that Grok would employ the "best back-end model for any given task," a notable shift from solely relying on xAI’s internally developed technology. This decision follows reports of user access problems with Grok on Tuesday.
The integration of external AI models into Grok, including Anthropic's Claude Opus, suggests a strategic shift for xAI. Despite significant investment in building its own AI, Grok will now route tasks to whichever external model it judges best suited for a particular request. This approach indicates a move toward leveraging specialized external capabilities rather than exclusively developing every function in-house.
This development also provides Anthropic with an additional commercial boost. The AI company is preparing for a potential stock market listing, and its models are gaining traction in business spending. Data from City AM indicated that Anthropic accounted for up to half of UK businesses’ spending with major AI providers in September, based on Capital on Tap transactions.
The decision could signal an evolving competitive landscape in AI. As different models excel at specific tasks, the ability to effectively manage and select among these diverse underlying technologies might become as important commercially as the development of the foundational models themselves. Owning the interface that intelligently dispatches tasks could emerge as a key differentiator.
