Microsoft to double data centers in Taiwan

Microsoft plans to double its data centers in Taiwan, expanding from two facilities to four. Microsoft Taiwan general manager Sean Pien stated that demand has consistently outstripped supply for the past two to three years. The expansion will primarily target northern Taiwan to meet customer needs and mitigate operational risks. The development follows the 2024 enablement of the first phase of Microsoft's Azure data center in Taoyuan.

    Nexa's Summary

Microsoft's decision to double its Taiwan data centers points to a persistent computing capacity shortage. This extends beyond GPUs and CPUs to power and server rack space. The company's internal demand for AI inference capacity, especially for services like Copilot, drives much of this expansion. Microsoft will prioritize its own ASIC capacity for internal use in the near term.

Taiwan's supply chain remains critical for global computing infrastructure. This includes AI servers, computing, storage, and networking. Microsoft's expansion reinforces Taiwan's central role, benefiting local manufacturers. The move also helps Microsoft meet local regulatory requirements for data sovereignty, serving government, healthcare, and financial institutions.

The thing to watch is how quickly Microsoft can bring these new facilities online. Sean Pien forecasts demand will continue to outstrip supply for another two to three years. Delays in construction or power grid integration could exacerbate current capacity constraints. This would impact both Microsoft's revenue growth and its ability to serve regulated industries.
