LG Electronics Brings Apple's Ecosystem Into Its Home Appliances
LG Electronics and Apple have launched seven jointly developed IoT devices, including cameras, door locks, and thermostats, for the AI home market. The products will be sold under the LG brand, integrating with LG ThinQ and Apple's ecosystem, with initial sales in North America and the UK this year. The partnership aims to combine LG's appliance manufacturing with Apple's mobile platform.
The collaboration between LG Electronics and Apple leverages each company's strengths to address gaps in the AI home market. LG provides manufacturing and customer support, drawing on its experience in home appliances. Apple contributes design, feature development, and engineering, integrating the new devices with its existing ecosystem of iPhones, iPads, and the Apple Watch, as well as a forthcoming dedicated Home View display.
This alliance positions LG and Apple to directly compete with Samsung Electronics, which has built its own AI home ecosystem across its diverse product lines. While Samsung integrates its smartphones with appliances, LG previously lacked a strong smartphone presence, and Apple had not established a broad foundation in home appliances despite its HomeKit platform. The partnership fills these respective weaknesses, allowing both to expand their reach in connected home technology.
The newly unveiled IoT devices feature security solutions from both companies, LG Shield and Apple's data encryption, to address concerns about hacking and data leaks. Functionally, the products use vision AI for monitoring, distinguishing between people and pets, and detecting unusual sounds. The thermostat adapts to user patterns and weather, while the door lock uses sensors to analyze intent, offering hands-free operation and security alerts.
