Korea's Conglomerate Chiefs Push AI Overhaul at Once
South Korean conglomerate leaders are pushing affiliate CEOs to accelerate AI innovation. LG Chairman Koo Kwang-mo held an eight-hour meeting on September 16 with 40 top executives to discuss AI factories and physical AI. POSCO Group Chairman Chang In-hwa stressed fast execution at the POSCO Forum on September 17-18. LS Chairman Koo Ja-eun urged dramatic productivity increases using AI in offices and manufacturing on September 18. Samsung's Roh Tae-moon also pledged leadership in robotics.
South Korea's chaebol chiefs are not just talking about AI; they are demanding rapid execution. LG's Koo Kwang-mo convened 40 executives for an eight-hour session, focusing on AI factories and physical AI. This level of direct, sustained engagement from the top reflects a belief that AI is now a core competitive battleground, not an optional investment. The urgency is clear: these industrial giants see physical AI and robotics as decisive for production and service quality.
The focus on physical AI and robotics among manufacturing giants like LG, POSCO, and LS stands out. This goes beyond software models and into tangible applications for factories and supply chains. South Korean conglomerates are betting that integrating AI into physical operations will differentiate them from global big tech firms. This strategy positions them to capture value in areas where physical presence and industrial expertise remain critical.
The test for these initiatives is whether they can convert global big tech collaborations into actual business results. LG's discussions specifically centered on this. The challenge is moving from strategic intent to concrete revenue streams within the next 12 to 18 months. Without clear, measurable outcomes, these top-down mandates risk becoming another round of corporate buzzwords.
