Korea Wraps Up Formal Review of Vuno's Medical AI Tool as Lunit, Others Await Next Year
South Korea’s medical AI sector is entering formal regulatory assessment. Vuno’s DeepCARS has completed its final deliberation with the National Evidence-based Healthcare Collaborating Agency (NECA). This marks the first step toward official recognition as a medical procedure. Other major AI companies, including Lunit, JLK, and Deepnoid, will undergo similar assessments starting early next year.
Vuno’s DeepCARS clearing NECA deliberation is not just a product approval. It creates a new medical procedure code for AI diagnostics in South Korea. This code will serve as a benchmark for later-entrant AI companies. It also enables discussions on national health insurance coverage, a critical step for broader adoption.
The real test for South Korean medical AI is insurance pricing. Hospitals need low patient costs to adopt these technologies. If reimbursement rates are set too low, commercial viability for Vuno and others will suffer. The initial rates for DeepCARS will likely set a precedent for the entire industry.
The conditional use period for JLK’s JBS-01K expires in February next year. This means more medical AI products will face formal assessment soon.
