Jaecoo J5 Tops Indonesia's Best-Selling Cars in August
The Jaecoo J5 BEV 4x2 Premium electric vehicle was Indonesia's top-selling passenger car in August 2026, according to data from the Association of Indonesian Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Gaikindo). The model sold 3,211 units, an increase from 3,154 units in July, maintaining its leading position. BYD also saw significant growth, with its total wholesale electric vehicle sales rising from 6,569 units in July to 7,870 units in August. While electric vehicles are gaining traction, Toyota remained the overall market leader in wholesale car sales for Indonesia, despite a slight dip from 21,642 units in July to 20,357 units in August.
Indonesia's automotive market reflects a clear shift toward electric vehicles, with the Jaecoo J5 BEV leading passenger car sales in August 2026. This performance, alongside BYD's robust growth in EV sales, points to increasing consumer adoption of electric models in Southeast Asia's largest economy. BYD's wholesale EV sales jumped from 6,569 units in July to 7,870 units in August, demonstrating strong market penetration. However, the broader market still shows a mixed picture. While EVs are gaining, traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, like the gasoline-powered Toyota Calya, also saw sales increases. Toyota maintained its overall top spot in wholesale car sales with over 20,000 units in August, indicating that the transition to EVs is ongoing but not yet a complete market takeover. The thing to watch is how quickly EV infrastructure and charging networks can scale to support this growing demand, particularly outside major urban centers.
