India Is Yet to Be Transformed: Ajay Piramal and Rajiv Kumar Engage with ICC Young Leaders Forum at ICC Centenary Book Launch
The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) launched its centenary book, "Never Taking No for an Answer: India’s Indomitable Private Enterprise," in Mumbai in September 2026. The event featured a fireside chat with Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Economist and Former Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, and Shri Ajay Piramal, Chairman of Piramal Group. The discussion, moderated by Ankit Gupta of the ICC Young Leaders Forum, focused on Indian enterprise, leadership, and the role of young leaders in the nation's future. Dr. Kumar highlighted India's need for transformation, noting the country is yet to reach its stated 5 trillion dollar economy goal. Shri Piramal emphasized the importance of values and encouraging young, enthusiastic leaders like Ankit Gupta.
Dr. Rajiv Kumar's remarks at the ICC centenary event in Mumbai underscore a critical challenge for India's economic ambitions. He points out that India has not yet reached its projected 5 trillion dollar economy target by 2024-2025, currently standing below 4 trillion dollars. This gap highlights a persistent issue of complacency within government bureaucracy, despite the Prime Minister's push against the status quo. The path to a 36 trillion dollar economy by 2050, as envisioned, will require significant innovation, R&D, and technological breakthroughs, moving beyond a "business as usual" approach. Shri Ajay Piramal's perspective on leadership complements this by stressing the enduring importance of values like integrity and risk-taking, even as business models evolve. He suggests that young leaders, particularly Gen Z, are more influenced by lived examples than lectures. The ICC Young Leaders Forum, led by Ankit Gupta, is positioned as a key platform for fostering this next generation of leaders, who are seen as vital for driving the necessary transformation and combating complacency in India's private enterprise sector.
