India backs Project VeerAI with Rs 130 crore debt to build home-grown AI vision chips

India's Technology Development Board (TDB) has committed Rs 130 crore in optional convertible debt to Bengaluru-based BigEndian Semiconductors. This funding supports Project VeerAI, an initiative with a total cost of Rs 260 crore, aimed at developing an indigenous AI Vision System-on-Chip (SoC) for surveillance and other applications.

    Nexa's Summary

Project VeerAI's primary objective is to advance a camera-focused AI Vision SoC from Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-5 to TRL-9, which signifies readiness for commercial deployment. This involves integrating AI processing with security, privacy, and connectivity features, initially targeting surveillance systems like CCTVs. The move is intended to lessen India's reliance on foreign semiconductor supply chains.

The initiative leverages India's existing talent in VLSI design and semiconductor engineering. By focusing on application-specific AI chips rather than general-purpose solutions, BigEndian Semiconductors aims to address particular sector requirements, potentially enabling quicker commercialization and product deployment. This approach could differentiate its offerings in a competitive market.

While the initial market for the AI Vision SoC is surveillance in India and the Global South, BigEndian plans to expand into sectors such as defense, automotive, industrial automation, and healthcare. The TDB's support through the RDI Fund will facilitate the necessary development, validation, testing, and scaling activities to bring this technology to market.
