Hyundai Rotem Unveils 370 km/h Bullet Train for $3.6B Race
Hyundai Rotem unveiled a new high-speed train model at InnoTrans 2026, developed in partnership with Hyundai Motor. The train targets a commercial operating speed of 370 kilometers per hour. It aims for Korea's 5 trillion won KTX-1 replacement project. This project will see Korea Railroad Corp. order 49 trainsets starting next year.
Hyundai Rotem's new high-speed train is a direct challenge to the KTX-1 replacement project, worth 5 trillion won. The 36% reduction in air resistance is a tangible engineering achievement. This collaboration with Hyundai Motor's design and aerodynamics teams shows a clear strategy to leverage group expertise for a premium product.
The move positions Hyundai Rotem to secure a significant domestic contract. Winning the KTX-1 replacement, with orders beginning next year for 49 trainsets, would solidify its market leadership in Korea. It also provides a strong reference for parallel overseas bids in Morocco, Uzbekistan, and New York.
The critical test for Hyundai Rotem is its fully autonomous hydrogen electric tram. No tram in Europe is certified at GoA4 for fully unattended operation. Commercial success for this tram would give Hyundai Rotem a first-mover advantage in a difficult European market.
