Huawei, Qualcomm strike multi-year patent agreement across 5G, AI
Qualcomm has entered into a multi-year patent licensing agreement with Huawei, which includes cross-licensing of both firms’ patent portfolios across 5G, computing, and artificial intelligence technologies. The deal also involves Qualcomm’s purchase of specific Huawei US patents for compute, AI, and networking, according to a statement from the Shenzhen-based company.
This agreement marks a notable development as it is the first time US-based Qualcomm has agreed to pay to license and acquire patents from China’s Huawei Technologies. The transaction specifically covers patents related to 5G, computing, and artificial intelligence, indicating a shared recognition of their value in these critical technology areas.
The deal's structure as a cross-licensing arrangement, alongside Qualcomm's direct purchase of certain Huawei US patents, suggests a strategic move by both companies to manage intellectual property. While the financial details remain undisclosed, the transaction's focus on patents for compute, AI, and networking highlights the areas where both firms see ongoing innovation and potential for future disputes or collaborations.
Huawei stated that this transaction does not involve any other business cooperation and is still subject to regulatory approvals. This separation of patent licensing from broader business partnerships suggests a focused approach to intellectual property rights, rather than a comprehensive collaboration between the two technology giants.
