Hong Kong expands technology support to boost small business resilience across Asia-Pacific
Hong Kong is expanding its technology support programs to bolster small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the Asia-Pacific region. Permanent Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Kevin Choi Kit-ming outlined a multipronged strategy at an APEC seminar in Guangzhou. This initiative aims to strengthen the resilience of Hong Kong's 360,000 SMEs, which represent over 98 percent of local businesses and employ 1.2 million people. The city is aligning its commercial development with national initiatives like the 15th Five-Year Plan and the Greater Bay Area development, while also expanding multilateral cooperation in areas such as AI integration and digital transformation.
Hong Kong's push to support SMEs through technology is a clear move to integrate its economy more deeply with mainland China's strategic initiatives. The focus on AI applications, smart production facilities, and cross-boundary incubation at the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park shows a practical approach to modernizing traditional businesses. The HK$1.7 billion investment across 79 applications for smart production lines reflects a tangible commitment to industrial upgrade, rather than just rhetoric. The city's role as an international bridge is crucial here. By deepening peer learning with Asia-Pacific economies in AI and digital transformation, Hong Kong aims to export its model for SME resilience. The risk lies in the execution: ensuring these programs genuinely reach and benefit the vast majority of SMEs, especially the one-person companies Cyberport is targeting, and that the technological adoption translates into sustained growth rather than just initial investment.
