Google launches Fitbit Air in India, though its high price might deter the masses
Google has launched the screen-less Fitbit Air fitness tracker in India, pricing it at ₹13,999 (approximately $146). This marks a higher price point compared to its $99 cost in the U.S., positioning it as a premium device in the Indian market, where it will compete with both global and local screen-less tracker brands.
The Fitbit Air is designed to appeal to users seeking distraction-free health gadgets, offering features like 24/7 heart rate monitoring, A-fib alerts, blood oxygen tracking, and sleep analysis. Its screen-less form factor aligns with a growing trend among consumers who are opting for devices that provide health data without the visual engagement of a screen.
Despite the product's features, its premium pricing in India, which is about $47 higher than in the U.S., could present a challenge. Research indicates that India accounts for only 5% of the screen-less wearable market, and a high price point might limit its broader adoption, even with the backing of Google and Fitbit.
The competitive landscape for screen-less trackers in India includes established global players like Garmin and Luffu Link, as well as local startups such as Noise and Urban. These Indian companies have often pursued a strategy of undercutting Western rivals on price, suggesting that Fitbit Air's premium positioning will face significant market scrutiny regarding its value proposition for consumers.
