General : Malaysia Must Shape, Not Follow, Global Tech Trends - Mohammad Yusof Apdal

Malaysia aims to transition from merely adopting global technology trends to actively shaping them, according to Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Mohammad Yusof Apdal. He stated this goal at the MIMOS Technology Preview (MTP) 2026, emphasizing the need for local talent, strategic partnerships, and homegrown businesses to develop and scale technologies like AI and cybersecurity.

The push for Malaysia to become a technology shaper, rather than a follower, is framed around strengthening local capabilities and fostering an innovation ecosystem. This involves supporting deep technologies such as AI, cybersecurity, and semiconductor advancements. The stated objective is to move beyond manufacturing products "Made in Malaysia" to developing technologies that are "invented, engineered and trusted in Malaysia" globally.

A key component of this strategy involves MIMOS Berhad, the national applied R&D center, which is tasked with bridging the gap between research and commercialization. MIMOS has already licensed 17 technology packages under the 12th Malaysia Plan and built a portfolio of over 2,000 patents. The center currently has 29 technology release packages ready for transfer and commercialization, with another 22 progressing by the end of 2026, indicating a pipeline of innovations.

Accelerating local tech adoption is highlighted as crucial, with an encouragement for government, industry, and strategic stakeholders to act as early adopters. This approach aims to provide reference sites for Malaysian innovations, which can help them gain international credibility. MIMOS Berhad's CEO, Dr. Saat Shukri Embong, further emphasized that the ultimate value of technology lies in its tangible benefits for public well-being and national security, particularly in establishing data and technology sovereignty.
