Geely Unveils 8-Minute Fast-Charging Battery to Challenge BYD, CATL
Geely Automobile unveiled its Shendun Golden Battery, which charges from 10% to 70% in four minutes and 30 seconds. The battery reaches 97% charge in eight minutes and 40 seconds, using 2.2-megawatt charging infrastructure. This technology directly challenges rivals BYD and CATL in China's ultra-fast charging market. Geely also introduced Xingrui PowerMind, an AI model developed with StepFun, to manage battery temperatures during high-output charging.
Geely's new Shendun Golden Battery charges faster than BYD's second-generation Blade battery, which takes nine minutes to reach 97%. This speed race is driven by weak domestic demand and falling profits among Chinese automakers. Geely's move also aims to reduce its reliance on CATL, which supplied 63.21% of batteries for Geely vehicles from January to July this year.
The integration of AI, specifically the Xingrui PowerMind model developed with StepFun, is critical. This system predicts battery temperatures 30 seconds in advance and adjusts charging output. It keeps average battery temperature below 55 degrees Celsius, addressing a key safety concern with ultra-fast charging. This AI approach could become a competitive differentiator beyond raw charging speed.
The real test for Geely is market adoption and whether its AI-managed safety claims hold up at scale. While CATL's market share in Geely vehicles has decreased from 63.21% to 28.50% in 2024, it remains dominant. The next year will show if Geely's in-house battery tech and AI can genuinely shift the supply chain balance and improve profitability.
