Galaxy S27 Ultra May Stick With Snapdragon But Exynos 2700 Is Still In The Game
Samsung may equip its upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip, potentially excluding its own Exynos 2700, according to reports citing leaker yeux1122 and IT Home. This comes despite claims of good manufacturing yields and plans for the Exynos 2700 to appear in other Galaxy S27 series models.
Samsung's chip strategy for its premium smartphones appears to involve a tension between its internal System LSI division, which aims to expand the use of proprietary processors, and its mobile division. The mobile division reportedly weighs performance, thermal management, cost, and available production capacity more heavily for high-end devices. The potential decision to reserve the Snapdragon chip for the Ultra model suggests that these specific concerns may currently outweigh the internal drive for greater Exynos adoption in its most premium offering.
While The Elec reported that mass production of the Exynos 2700 began in early October with planned output more than 10% higher than its predecessor, and it is expected in Galaxy S27, S27+, and S27 Pro models for Europe and South Korea, the Ultra model presents a distinct set of considerations. Premium phone buyers have high expectations for sustained performance without issues like overheating or rapid battery drain, making chip selection a critical factor for Samsung in this segment.
Early benchmark figures, such as internal test results reported by The Elec suggesting the Exynos 2700 could outperform the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 in Geekbench 6 multi-core tests by roughly 9.5%, offer an incomplete picture. The article notes these figures have not been independently verified and do not indicate how a chip handles heat, battery use, or sustained workloads. Therefore, these preliminary results alone may not be sufficient to finalize the mobile division's decision for the Ultra model, which likely requires comprehensive performance validation under various conditions.
