Everything I know about AI regulation I learned from music videos
The release of Claude Opus 5.5 in September 2026 led to a reported improvement in AI-generated music, giving rise to a new genre called ‘slopcore.’ These music videos, often coded by AI models, have unexpectedly become a forum for discussions on AI safety, governance, and policy.
The author of Technollama Ip Blog noted a shift in the quality of AI-generated music following the September 2026 release of Claude Opus 5.5. Previously finding AI music to be like "elevator muzak," the author observed that certain AI music videos became "genuinely good," suggesting an advancement in the creative output of models like Claude Opus 5.5.
A key development for this new genre, named 'slopcore,' involved Claude Opus 5.5 generating a music video for the song 'I’m Upping My P(doom).' The model reportedly created the entire video, including its animation guide, within a system called 'Claude Code,' producing nine chapters of p5.js animation. This process, where the AI writes code for visual content rather than directly producing video, became a characteristic of many 'slopcore' productions.
Beyond entertainment, 'slopcore' has fostered discussions around complex AI topics. Videos within this genre reportedly explore themes such as AI consciousness, superpersuasion, and AGI timelines. This indicates how popular cultural forms, even those emerging from AI-driven creation, can become a medium for public engagement with critical technological and ethical issues.
