Digital payments top P22T as of end-August
Digital payment transactions in the Philippines reached P22.12 trillion from January to August 2026. This represents a 44.72 percent increase from the P15.29 trillion recorded in the same period in 2025. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported 5.77 billion transactions, up 141.79 percent year-over-year. InstaPay accounted for P11.08 trillion of this value, a 59.9 percent climb, while PESONet processed P11.05 trillion, up 32.14 percent.
The Philippines has surpassed its 2028 digital payments target of 60-70 percent of retail transactions, reaching 64.7 percent in 2025. This rapid adoption is driven by InstaPay, which saw a 145.96 percent increase in transaction volume to 5.68 billion and a 59.9 percent value increase to P11.08 trillion through August 2026. This is a clear indicator of successful financial inclusion policy.
The growth in digital payments presents a clear opportunity for fintechs operating in the Philippines. InstaPay's dominance in transaction volume suggests a strong preference for instant, lower-value transfers. This benefits consumer-facing payment apps and e-wallets, putting pressure on traditional banking services to innovate or lose market share among retail users. PESONet's slower growth in volume, at 14.81 percent, confirms its role for larger, business-to-business transactions.
The thing to watch is the sustainability of month-on-month growth. August 2026 saw a 3.58 percent decline in combined transaction value from July, despite a 2.33 percent increase in volume. This suggests a potential plateau in overall value, even as transaction counts rise. Regulators must monitor if this trend continues, as it could point to saturation in certain segments or a shift to lower-value transactions.
