DGCA issues new training framework for Gyroplane Pilot licences
India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a new Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) outlining the training syllabus for gyroplane pilot licenses. This framework is intended to enable the introduction of gyroplane operations in the country, covering both ground and flying training requirements for pilot certification.
The newly notified CAR, titled “Ground and Flying Training Syllabus for Issue of Pilot Licence for Gyroplanes,” details the specific ground and flying training candidates must complete. Gyroplanes differ from helicopters as their rotor system generates lift through free rotation, while an engine-driven propeller provides forward movement, making them suitable for specialized and recreational uses.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation stated that the CAR prescribes the necessary syllabus for obtaining a DGCA gyroplane pilot license. The aviation regulator expects gyroplanes to be deployed for activities such as joyrides, air experience flights, and various aerial work operations, including agricultural spraying, banner towing, surveillance, and survey missions.
The DGCA views this CAR as a first step toward operationalizing gyroplanes in India, providing a foundation for pilot training and licensing. However, the regulator noted that additional measures, such as establishing dedicated training organizations and developing domestic manufacturing and assembly capabilities, will be necessary to fully support the growth of the gyroplane segment.
