DBS Commits S$1 Million to Help Seniors, Migrant Workers Amid Haze
DBS has committed S$1 million to haze relief efforts in Singapore, primarily targeting seniors and migrant workers. The initiative aims to benefit 275,000 people, distributing 550,000 N95 masks and 100 air purifiers. This initial phase also includes internal haze response measures for DBS employees, as announced by the bank.
DBS's S$1 million haze relief initiative focuses on providing immediate respiratory protection and cleaner air access for vulnerable groups in Singapore. The effort distributes 550,000 N95 masks, allocating two per person to an estimated 275,000 beneficiaries, including seniors and migrant workers. Additionally, 100 air purifiers are being supplied to 500 homebound seniors living alone, channeled through DBS Foundation-supported social service agencies like Allkin Singapore and Lions Befrienders.
The distribution strategy for masks varies: 50,000 masks and the air purifiers go to social service agencies, while another 500,000 masks are destined for migrant workers via selected dormitories and seven recreation centres. This latter effort involves collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower and dormitory operators, with some recreation centre distributions scheduled for October 25. Lim Him Chuan, DBS Singapore Country Head, noted that outdoor workers and some seniors may be disproportionately affected by haze, underscoring the bank's commitment to community support.
While N95 masks offer essential individual protection against particulate matter and air purifiers improve indoor air quality for specific high-risk groups, the allocation of two masks per person suggests a short-term intervention. For its own employees, DBS implemented a more comprehensive haze response, including N95 masks, carbon filters at premises, and flexible working arrangements. This distinction highlights the immediate, foundational nature of the support offered to external beneficiaries.
DBS stated these measures mark the first phase of the initiative, with further support to be announced as conditions evolve. This indicates that the current commitment is an initial step, and a more comprehensive or sustained response to an ongoing haze situation may be detailed in future announcements.
