Cybercrime office vs online scams created
Romblon’s provincial government has established a new Provincial Cybercrime Office under Ordinance No. 25, Series of 2026. The office aims to strengthen local responses to online scams, identity theft, and other technology-related offenses, while also protecting government digital infrastructure and supporting public awareness programs.
The newly formed Provincial Cybercrime Office in Romblon is designed to provide specialized technical support for law enforcement. Its functions include assisting in cybercrime investigations and conducting digital evidence examination and recovery, which involves forensically analyzing electronic devices and data to extract and restore relevant information. This suggests an effort to enhance the technical capabilities available for local crime-solving.
The office is also tasked with protecting government information systems and digital infrastructure, indicating a proactive stance on cybersecurity for public services. It is expected to coordinate with existing bodies such as the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group and the Provincial Cybercrime Response Team, suggesting an integration into broader national and regional cybercrime frameworks.
Beyond reactive measures, the ordinance mandates the office to recommend cybersecurity policies and support public awareness programs. This dual approach aims to both respond to incidents and educate the public on digital threats. The provision of operational and technical funding, including for communications and equipment, suggests a foundational commitment to resourcing these activities.
