Cumberland Secures Singapore Licence for Digital Tokens, Money Transfers
Cumberland, the digital asset trading and liquidity arm of Chicago-based DRW, has secured a Major Payment Institution licence in Singapore. This full licence, granted by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to Cumberland SG Pte. Ltd. under the Payment Services Act, permits the company to provide digital payment token services and cross-border money transfers. The approval follows an in-principle nod from MAS in March 2023, after which Cumberland was required to meet additional regulatory conditions. The company, which offers market-making and liquidity services to institutional clients, plans to further expand its operations in Singapore.
Cumberland's acquisition of a Major Payment Institution licence in Singapore underscores the city-state's continued efforts to establish itself as a leading hub for digital assets and fintech innovation in Asia. This regulatory clarity is crucial for institutional players like Cumberland, as it provides the legal framework necessary to operate and expand services involving digital payment tokens and cross-border transfers, thereby fostering greater confidence and participation from other global firms.
The move also highlights Singapore's balanced approach to regulating the nascent digital asset space, aiming to mitigate risks while encouraging innovation. By granting such licences, MAS signals its commitment to creating a robust and secure environment for digital asset businesses, which in turn attracts more foreign direct investment and talent into the region's tech ecosystem. This development is likely to further solidify Singapore's position as a preferred jurisdiction for digital asset companies looking to tap into the broader Asian market.
