CityUHK and University of Cambridge establish Centre for Advanced and Smart Manufacturing to shape Hong Kong's Industry 5.0 future
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and the University of Cambridge have launched the Centre for Advanced and Smart Manufacturing (CASM). This new center aims to establish Hong Kong as a leading Industry 5.0 innovation hub. CASM will focus on sustainable and human-centric manufacturing, integrating AI with environmental and social responsibility. It operates under the Hong Kong Science Park's InnoHK initiative, SEAM@InnoHK, and is co-led by Professor Lu Jian of CityUHK and Professor Colm Durkan of Cambridge.
Hong Kong’s reindustrialization push gains momentum with the CASM launch. This initiative, backed by CityUHK and Cambridge, targets Industry 5.0, which prioritizes AI alongside sustainability and human expertise. The focus on additive manufacturing for applications like data center cooling and green new energy vehicles shows a clear path. This is a pragmatic approach to re-establishing a manufacturing base, rather than a broad, unfocused strategy.
The Centre's explicit focus on recycled aluminum for new energy vehicles and advanced cooling for data centers directly addresses critical regional needs. Hong Kong aims to leverage its international outlook and Greater Bay Area ties. This positions it as a technology gateway, attracting global talent and connecting research to the industrial ecosystem. The test for CASM will be its ability to translate research into commercial applications within the next three years.
The emphasis on talent development, including PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, is crucial. Hong Kong needs to rebuild a skilled manufacturing workforce. This long-term investment in human capital is as important as the technological advancements. The city’s success in advanced manufacturing hinges on retaining these trained professionals within the local industry.
