China’s tech giants are paying 1 million yuan for a new kind of AI engineer

Forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) are becoming a critical link for Chinese tech giants seeking to monetize their artificial intelligence investments. These specialists are defined by their direct engagement with customers, where they develop and integrate AI applications into existing business operations. The significant remuneration packages, approaching 1 million yuan annually, coupled with a reported 1,523 per cent increase in job postings for FDEs on Maimai in the first seven months compared to the same period in 2025, highlight the urgent demand for this expertise. This surge indicates that major players like ByteDance, Tencent, and Alibaba are prioritizing the hands-on application and tailored integration of AI solutions into diverse customer environments.

The high investment in FDEs suggests that a key challenge for commercializing AI models may not solely be in their creation, but in their effective adaptation and deployment within varied enterprise contexts. The ability of FDEs to directly translate AI capabilities into tangible business value for clients appears to be a crucial function that companies are aggressively addressing to accelerate their AI commercialization efforts.
