China’s storage makers aim to climb value chain with advanced packaging bets

Biwin Storage Technology is investing US$672 million (4.5 billion yuan) into the third phase of an advanced packaging and testing project in Dongguan, China. This sum exceeds the 3.09 billion yuan Biwin put into the first two phases combined. The project is currently in customer sampling and small-batch production, with no mass production revenue yet. Biwin forecasts its monthly capacity will more than triple to 10,000 wafers by the end of 2027.

    Nexa's Summary

Chinese storage makers are moving beyond traditional module packaging into more complex wafer-level operations. Biwin's US$672 million investment reflects a broader push to climb the value chain. This shift is critical for China's semiconductor ambitions, especially as it seeks greater self-sufficiency in chip manufacturing and advanced processes.

The move by Biwin and others like it points to increased competition for established Asian packaging players, particularly those in Taiwan and South Korea. As Chinese firms develop advanced packaging capabilities, they will challenge existing supply chains. The test for China is whether these investments translate into competitive yields and customer adoption beyond domestic markets.

The thing to watch is the ramp-up of Biwin's Dongguan facility. Its forecast of 10,000 wafers per month by late 2027 is ambitious. If Biwin achieves this capacity and secures significant customer orders, it validates China's strategy to upgrade its domestic chip ecosystem. Failure to reach mass production revenue quickly would signal ongoing challenges in advanced manufacturing.
