China’s JCET to build new plant in Shanghai to expand advanced chip packaging
Chinese chip-packaging and testing giant Jiangsu Changjiang Electronics Technology (JCET) is investing 7.8 billion yuan (US$1.15 billion) to construct a new advanced packaging and testing plant in Shanghai. This significant investment comes as China experiences a surge in demand for domestically produced chips, driven by the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. A new controlled subsidiary, capitalized at 4 billion yuan, will oversee the development of this facility in the Lin-gang Special Area. This expansion aims to bolster China's self-sufficiency in critical semiconductor technologies amidst global supply chain complexities.
JCET's substantial investment in a new advanced packaging plant in Shanghai underscores China's strategic imperative to strengthen its domestic semiconductor supply chain, particularly in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions and a global push for technological independence. Advanced packaging is a crucial bottleneck in chip manufacturing, enabling higher performance and smaller form factors, which are essential for AI applications. By expanding its capabilities in this area, China aims to reduce its reliance on foreign technology and enhance its competitiveness in the global AI landscape.
This move also highlights the broader trend of national governments prioritizing domestic production in critical technology sectors. For Asia's tech ecosystem, it signifies a deepening of regional specialization and competition, with China aggressively building out its indigenous capacity across the semiconductor value chain. The investment will likely foster further innovation within China's chip industry and could influence future investment patterns and strategic alliances across the continent, as other nations assess their own semiconductor vulnerabilities and opportunities.
