China’s home-grown DUV progress not the biggest threat to ASML, analysts say
Western anxieties are rising over potential breakthroughs in Chinese chipmaking gear, but analysts suggest that home-grown machines are not the greatest threat to industry leader ASML. The Dutch firm’s shares experienced a significant drop, falling over 8 percent at one point on Monday in the US before closing down 5.8 percent. This decline followed a report that China had commenced manufacturing its own immersion deep-ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines. A state-backed company in Shanghai is reportedly behind this development, signaling China’s progress in domestic semiconductor equipment production. Despite the market reaction, experts indicate that other factors pose a more substantial challenge to ASML’s market dominance.
This development highlights China’s persistent drive for self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing, a critical strategic goal for Beijing amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions and export controls.
