China's CXMT Starts Mass Production of Fifth-Generation DRAM
China's Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has begun mass production of its fifth-generation G5 DRAM. This new process lifts dies per wafer by at least 50% compared to its fourth generation. CXMT holds a 9.5% share of global DRAM revenue, ranking fourth. The company also announced mass production of LPDDR6 and trial production of HBM3E.
CXMT's G5 DRAM mass production is a direct challenge to the global memory incumbents. The 50% increase in dies per wafer on an 8Gb-equivalent basis shows a significant leap in manufacturing capability. CXMT is positioned to fill the commodity DRAM market gap while major players focus on HBM and high-capacity server DDR5.
This development will pressure South Korean memory giants Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. As CXMT expands in commodity DRAM, it could weaken the incumbents' ability to defend prices. The test for Samsung and SK hynix is whether their HBM and DDR5 focus can offset this increased competition in the broader market.
The real thing to watch is CXMT's HBM3E trial production. If CXMT can quickly scale HBM3E, it will directly compete in the high-value segment currently dominated by South Korean and US firms. This would fundamentally alter the global memory landscape by 2027.
