Cashfree Launches AI Checkout Tool for Agent-Led Payments
Bengaluru-based Cashfree Payments has launched Checkout for Agents, a new solution designed to streamline online payments initiated by artificial intelligence agents. The platform uses the open-source WebMCP protocol to connect AI agents with merchant payment interfaces, aiming to reduce transaction errors and customer drop-offs. Merchants already using Cashfree's checkout pages can access the feature without code changes.
Cashfree Payments' new Checkout for Agents addresses challenges in "agentic commerce," where AI agents conduct shopping tasks for users. Traditional e-commerce sites, built for human interaction, often require AI agents to process extensive webpage data to complete purchases, which can lead to inefficiencies. This solution allows AI agents to directly access checkout actions, such as retrieving order totals and selecting payment methods, via the open-source WebMCP protocol.
The company claims this direct access approach can reduce token consumption by over 40%, lower transaction errors, and decrease customer drop-offs during payment. Cashfree cofounder Reeju Datta stated that agent-led payments could see increased conversion speed and a near 100% success rate, attributing this to the system's ability to prevent drop-offs at the payment layer.
This launch prepares for a reported increase in AI agent traffic, which Datta noted has grown four to five times annually for Cashfree and converts five times better than the company's SEO traffic. While the system supports personal AI assistants like Instinct, Meta's Muse, and Grok Bot, users maintain control over transaction approval, with existing authentication requirements continuing to apply where merchants require them.
