Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Seeks More Microsoft Data Center Investment
The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority (BJFEZ) met with Microsoft Korea's CEO to discuss support for additional data center investments in the Busan area. Discussions focused on power supply, regional industrial electricity rates, and aligning support measures with the company's investment plans, following two previous data center constructions in 2020 and 2024.
The BJFEZ's engagement with Microsoft Korea highlights how regional authorities are adapting their investment attraction strategies for the AI era. With data centers evolving into core AI infrastructure, operational factors such as power supply, industrial electricity rates, and cooling are becoming decisive for investment. This focus indicates a shift from general industrial development to targeted support for high-demand digital infrastructure.
The discussions reflect a broader South Korean government policy to foster AI data centers as a national strategic industry while promoting balanced regional growth. Initiatives like the "5 Poles, 3 Special Zones" strategy and the potential introduction of regional industrial electricity rates aim to incentivize power-intensive industries to invest outside the capital region. For companies like Microsoft, these policy shifts could directly impact the economic feasibility of expanding their data center footprint.
The authority's plan to tailor support measures based on Microsoft Korea's specific investment difficulties and future plans demonstrates a practical approach to attracting global data center operators. By addressing on-site challenges and linking support to future commitments, the BJFEZ aims to create a more attractive environment for AI and digital companies, moving beyond generic incentives to offer concrete operational and infrastructural backing.
