Budget 2027: Sovereign AI Cloud Planned, 100,000 More Free AI Subscriptions, AI App To Check Scams
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced Budget 2027, outlining plans for a Sovereign AI Cloud to secure national data, alongside initiatives to expand free AI subscriptions for young people. The budget also allocates funds for AI skill development, SME adoption, and the creation of an AI application to combat scams, according to the announcement.
Malaysia’s Budget 2027 reflects a multifaceted approach to AI integration, balancing national data sovereignty with digital literacy and economic development. The proposed Sovereign AI Cloud aims to keep citizens’ data and strategic information under Malaysian control, a move that could shape future data governance frameworks. This approach prioritizes national oversight in a domain increasingly dominated by global cloud providers.
Beyond infrastructure, the budget emphasizes human capital development and practical AI applications. Expanding free AI subscriptions, now including new AI applications such as ChatGPT, suggests an effort to democratize AI literacy among young people. The allocation of nearly RM15 million to AI Malaysia Berhad, targeting 200,000 AI-skilled workers, and a RM30 million MDEC fund to help 4,000 SMEs adopt AI, indicates a push to build a local AI-skilled workforce and encourage business adoption.
The focus on an AI application for the National Scam Response Centre to check suspicious links or numbers, alongside the Royal Malaysia Police D11 division upgrading its Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children system, highlights a direct application of AI to public safety and cybersecurity. These initiatives aim to protect citizens from digital threats. The government's plan to build its own AI based on national identity, using authenticated language data from ministries and institutions, also points to a strategic effort to tailor AI development to local cultural contexts.
