BRICS Explores CBDC Links to Cut Cross Border Payment Costs
BRICS nations are exploring closer links between their fast payment systems and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) to reduce the cost of cross-border transactions. Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra confirmed these proposals are under discussion, with potential approaches including greater interoperability between instant payment networks and connections between national CBDCs. India, which holds the BRICS chairmanship this year and will host the 2026 summit, has been a key driver of this initiative, pushing for CBDC connectivity to facilitate trade and tourism payments. The group currently comprises 11 members, including major Asian economies like China, India, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia, indicating a significant push towards de-dollarization and localized currency use in international trade.
The BRICS initiative to link CBDCs and fast payment systems represents a significant development for Asia's financial technology landscape. By aiming to reduce cross-border payment costs, this move could accelerate the adoption of digital currencies and instant payment networks across member states, many of which are key Asian economies. This push for interoperability not only enhances efficiency but also signals a strategic effort to reduce reliance on traditional Western-dominated financial infrastructure, fostering greater financial autonomy within the bloc.
For Asian tech ecosystems, this could spur innovation in fintech, particularly in areas like blockchain development, secure payment gateways, and digital identity solutions. Companies specializing in these fields within India, China, Indonesia, and other BRICS nations could see increased demand and investment. Furthermore, the emphasis on promoting local currencies in cross-border trade could reshape regional trade dynamics, potentially leading to new payment corridors and reduced foreign exchange risks for businesses operating within the BRICS network. This policy shift underscores a broader trend towards digital sovereignty and localized financial solutions that will undoubtedly influence market dynamics across Asia.
