Athenahealth patients can ask Claude about their medical records now

US healthcare technology provider Athenahealth has partnered with Anthropic to connect patient health records with its Claude AI model. The new AthenaPatient MCP server allows patients to ask questions about their health data, such as lab results and medications. Athenahealth states the process is secure, requires patient authentication, and allows users to control data access and revoke it at any time.

Athenahealth, which serves over 20% of the US population, has launched AthenaPatient MCP, a server designed to integrate patient health records with Anthropic's Claude. This tool enables Claude Pro and Claude Max users to query their personal health information, covering details like lab results, medications, and visit history. Its stated purpose is to help patients better understand information provided by health professionals, rather than offer medical advice or replace clinician judgment.

A key aspect of this partnership emphasizes patient control and data privacy. Access to AthenaPatient MCP requires users to actively opt-in by providing authenticated Athenahealth credentials. Patients can also select which specific health information Claude can access and retain the ability to revoke this access at any time. Importantly, Athenahealth states that its agreement prohibits Anthropic from using any data accessed through this connection to train its AI models or improve its products.

This collaboration between Athenahealth and Anthropic reflects a broader trend within the health tech industry, where major tech companies are increasingly partnering with healthcare providers. While health data is valuable for AI development, this specific integration appears focused on secure, patient-initiated information retrieval, aligning with a growing public interest in consulting AI for health-related queries.
