Ant Group consolidates Alipay operations in big bet on AI ‘agentic commerce’
Ant Group has restructured its online payments operations, consolidating its Digital Payment Business Group, Alipay Business Group, and Zhima Credit Business Group. This action forms a new Alipay business unit. The Chinese fintech giant aims to sharpen its focus on artificial intelligence and "agentic commerce" for growth. Wu Minzhi, a veteran executive, will lead the new Alipay Business Group.
Ant Group's consolidation of Alipay operations is a direct response to CEO Cyril Han Xinyi's belief that agentic commerce is entering a phase of "explosive, large-scale growth". This is more than a mere reorganization. It reflects a strategic bet on AI driving future transaction volume, moving beyond traditional payment processing.
For China, this means Ant is doubling down on its domestic market dominance. The restructuring aims to "further consolidate technology, product and ecosystem capabilities and strengthen the merchant service system". This will likely intensify competition for smaller fintech players in China as Ant leverages its AI capabilities to deepen merchant integration.
The test for Ant is whether its agentic commerce strategy can translate into tangible revenue growth in the next 12 to 18 months. Watch for specific AI-driven product launches within the new Alipay Business Group. These will show if Ant can truly innovate beyond its core payments business.
