Amazon launches Alexa+ in India with Hindi support
Amazon has launched its Alexa+ conversational assistant in India, offering Hindi language support. The new AI assistant features improved contextual understanding and an expressive voice. It is available to all customers in an early access period. Prime members will receive free access after testing, while non-Prime users will pay ₹2,000 per month. The assistant integrates with local services like Swiggy and Zomato’s District platform.
Amazon’s Alexa+ launch in India with Hindi support targets a massive user base. India has over 600 million Hindi speakers. The assistant’s availability in India follows its 2025 announcement and 2026 US rollout. Amazon’s smart home device sales in India grew by 20% last year, showing market traction for its hardware. The company aims to deepen its ecosystem integration with this language expansion.
This launch presents a direct challenge to Google Assistant in India, which also supports Hindi. Amazon’s strategy focuses on deep integration with its own services like Amazon Now for groceries and third-party apps such as Swiggy. The ₹2,000 monthly fee for non-Prime users could be a barrier. This positions Alexa+ as a premium offering, potentially limiting broader adoption among cost-sensitive consumers.
The key thing to watch is the adoption rate among non-Prime users. If Amazon sees strong uptake despite the monthly fee, it validates a premium AI assistant model in India. This would encourage more localized AI development. However, limited adoption could force Amazon to reconsider its pricing strategy or expand free features beyond Prime.
