Alibaba unveils new powerful chip and ambitious AI model plans
Alibaba unveiled its new Zhenwu V900 chip, which it claims is China's most powerful AI chip. The company states the V900 delivers three times the performance of its previous Zhenwu M890 chip. Alibaba also announced plans to train a new AI model with five to 10 trillion parameters. The company aims to rival leading US models, as its current Qwen3.8-Max model has 2.4 trillion parameters.
Alibaba's new Zhenwu V900 chip and its ambitious five to 10 trillion parameter AI model plans show China's continued push for AI self-reliance. The V900's claimed three times performance increase over its predecessor is notable. This development comes as US export restrictions limit China's access to advanced AI chip technology. Chinese firms like Alibaba must build domestic alternatives.
This focus on homegrown chips and large models directly impacts the Asian AI market. Chinese open models are already gaining global traction, including in the US, often at lower costs. Alibaba's expanded data center capacity, targeting over 20 gigawatts by 2032, will support this growth. This provides a clear alternative to Nvidia-dependent infrastructure for regional clients.
The real test for Alibaba is not just chip design but also advanced chip manufacturing. Counterpoint analysts note the gap between China and the US depends on foundry capabilities. Global shortages in the AI data center supply chain also limit Alibaba's scaling speed. Watch whether China can close the foundry gap in the next three to five years.
