AI Stocks Have Taken A Beating, But Gene Munster Says The Biggest AI Boom Is Still Ahead

AI stocks are facing renewed pressure due to political uncertainty potentially slowing data center construction and infrastructure spending. However, Deepwater Asset Management's Gene Munster suggests investors may be overlooking the long-term opportunity. Munster drew parallels to the early 2025 market turbulence, when Chinese AI startup DeepSeek rattled investors, but argues the latest pullback is a buying opportunity, not a fundamental shift.

Gene Munster acknowledges that political uncertainty and potential data center moratoriums could impact AI infrastructure growth, particularly in 2027 and 2028. However, he contends that markets have largely factored in this near-term slowdown. His core argument is that these pressures represent a temporary market pullback rather than a fundamental change to the long-term AI investment narrative, viewing it as a potential buying opportunity.

Munster bases this long-term outlook on the remarkably low current adoption of AI, which he estimates at less than 1% across the digital economy and even lower in physical AI applications. This significant "runway" suggests that any delayed data centers will ultimately be essential to support future adoption. Beyond infrastructure, he identifies personal AI agents, currently used by an estimated 20 million daily users, as a category with potential to reach billions.

Further opportunities, in Munster's view, lie in enterprise AI, where companies spend a fraction on AI compared to traditional software, indicating substantial room for AI spending to replace and expand existing budgets. Physical AI, including autonomous vehicles and robotics across sectors like healthcare and logistics, also maintains adoption below 1% despite high year-over-year growth, signaling vast untapped potential. He believes market forces and government support will eventually facilitate renewed investment.
