AI rise could fuel China invasion threat: Palantir
Mike Gallagher, Palantir Technologies Inc.'s head of defense, has warned that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) could make it more strategically compelling for Chinese President Xi Jinping to potentially seize control of Taiwan. Gallagher, a former US Congressman, emphasized Taiwan's growing importance in AI development amidst US-China technological competition.
Mike Gallagher, who leads defense efforts for Palantir Technologies Inc. and previously chaired a US House committee focused on strategic competition with China, suggests that Taiwan's central role in AI development has elevated its strategic value. This perspective arises from the ongoing competition between the US and China for dominance in AI technology, which Gallagher views as a game-changing advancement comparable to the advent of nuclear weapons.
Gallagher specifically points to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), based in Taiwan, as a critical "chokepoint." He argues that if China were to take control of or disable TSMC, it could impede US progress in AI technology and potentially exert significant economic leverage over the rest of the world. Palantir itself is a key provider of AI technology for the US military, including its Maven Smart System for surveillance and targeting.
While Gallagher's assessment highlights AI's strategic implications, it contrasts with a US intelligence assessment from March that concluded a potential invasion of Taiwan "would be extremely challenging and carry a high risk of failure." Separately, a Chinese embassy spokesman reiterated that the "Taiwan question is China's internal affair," urging the US to "act prudently."
