Xiaomi develops its own AI mobile chip in challenge to Qualcomm, MediaTek
Xiaomi Corp has launched its own mobile processor, the Xring O3 system-on-a-chip, for its flagship devices. This move reduces its reliance on long-time suppliers Qualcomm Inc and MediaTek Inc. The new 3-nanometer chip, manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), features enhanced power efficiency for image processing and improved artificial intelligence capabilities. This development follows years of Xiaomi’s in-house semiconductor research and aims to strengthen its market position. The Xring O3 is expected to power Xiaomi’s upcoming foldable phone, with a target shipment of 200,000 to 300,000 units.
Xiaomi’s introduction of the Xring O3 chip is a significant step in its strategy to reduce dependence on foreign semiconductor suppliers like Qualcomm and MediaTek. This internal chip development, leveraging TSMC’s 3-nanometer fabrication process, directly challenges the established duopoly in mobile processors and enhances Xiaomi’s bargaining power. The focus on improved AI capabilities within the chip also reflects the increasing importance of on-device AI processing for premium smartphones in Asia. While the move boosts Xiaomi’s independence and consumer appeal, particularly in the competitive foldable phone segment against Huawei, the company faces broader market challenges. Xiaomi saw the heaviest shipment decline among major hardware makers in the June quarter, and its electric vehicle business is also struggling with stagnant consumption. The success of the Xring O3 will be tied not only to its technical performance but also to Xiaomi’s ability to reverse these declining market trends and effectively compete with Huawei’s 68 percent share in China’s foldable phone market.
