Malaysia wants to move away from Waze. Will drivers make the switch?

Malaysia has banned the Israeli navigation app Waze for civil servants and urged citizens to stop using it, citing data security risks and its compliance with Israeli data laws. However, many Malaysian motorists, including professional drivers, report difficulties switching due to the perceived lack of a viable local alternative.

The Malaysian government's directive, issued on October 20, prohibits civil servants from using Waze and encourages the public to follow suit. This policy reflects concerns over sensitive government information and personal data, which the Prime Minister’s Office stated must be protected from exploitation by the Israeli regime. Malaysia does not have diplomatic ties with Israel and supports the Palestinian cause, though Waze has rejected allegations of data exploitation.

Despite the government's call, many Malaysian motorists find it challenging to abandon Waze. Taxi driver Mohamed Aidil, for instance, uninstalled the homegrown app TuJu within 24 hours, citing missing destinations and illogical directions. This highlights a practical dilemma where the perceived superior functionality of Waze, particularly its real-time traffic updates, accurate travel times, and route optimization, often outweighs political or data security concerns for everyday users.

E-hailing drivers like P. Vishovartan rely on Waze for its real-time incident updates and ability to find alternative routes during heavy traffic, even while using other navigation for work. Masrizal Mahidin, president of the Malaysia E-Hailing and Delivery Organisation (MEDO), confirmed that Waze remains the preferred app for many e-hailing riders due to its effectiveness. These accounts collectively suggest that for many, the immediate utility and convenience of Waze currently supersede the government's exhortation and the availability of less-developed local alternatives.
