The free and offline VLC media player, developed by the non-profit VideoLAN, has surpassed 7 billion downloads across all platforms. This milestone was announced by Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president and lead developer of VLC, and comes approximately 18 months after the application reached 6 billion downloads in January 2025. VideoLAN recently ported VLC to Amazon’s new Vega OS for TVs and is working on supporting additional platforms and codecs. The company is also developing VLC 4, though its release timeline is extended.

    Nexa 摘要

VLC's continued growth to 7 billion downloads, with 1 billion added in 18 months, underscores the enduring demand for free, offline media solutions, even amid the rise of streaming platforms. This trend is particularly relevant in emerging Asian markets where internet access can be inconsistent or data costs high. The ability to consume media offline without subscriptions remains a critical factor for many users across Southeast Asia and India. While VLC's core offering is media playback, its past teasing of AI-powered translation and subtitles using local models points to a potential future direction. If these features were to materialize, they could significantly enhance accessibility for diverse language groups across Asia, offering a powerful tool for content consumption without relying on cloud-based AI services. This focus on local models could also address data privacy concerns prevalent in several Asian countries. The challenge will be in the actual delivery and integration of such advanced AI capabilities, given the reported delays in VLC 4's development.
