Thailand Postpones US$30 Departure Tax on Travellers

Thailand has postponed a proposed THB1,000 (US$30) departure tax for international travellers, confirmed by Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas. The decision aims to avoid increasing travel costs, although a separate foreign tourist entry fee remains under consideration by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Thailand has deferred its planned THB1,000 (US$30) departure tax, which was intended for eligible travellers leaving by air. This postponement, confirmed by Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, was made to prevent additional international travel costs and in consideration of rising energy prices affecting airline operating expenses.

Crucially, the postponement of the departure tax does not impact a distinct proposal for a foreign tourist entry fee. This separate fee, managed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, is still under consideration. It is proposed to increase from THB300 (US$9) to THB450 (US$13) and would apply to visitors arriving by air, land, and sea.

The financial implications of these levies are substantial. While the postponed departure tax was projected to generate THB45.9 billion (US$1.36 billion), the Association of Thai Travel Agents estimated it could reduce annual tourism revenue by THB50 billion to THB150 billion (US$1.48 billion to US$4.45 billion). The government's current focus is on fostering tourism growth, having welcomed 24.42 million foreign visitors generating THB1.19 trillion (US$35.27 billion) from January to October 2026.
