Foreign investors boost Chinese stock holdings as AI hardware, green energy lure inflows
Foreign investors significantly increased their holdings in yuan-traded Chinese stocks during the second quarter of this year. Global fund managers held 10.1 billion shares in mainland-listed companies by the end of June, an increase from 7.5 billion shares in the first quarter. The total value of these foreign holdings surged 87 percent to 272.8 billion yuan (US$40.6 billion), driven by investments in AI supply chain companies and China’s green energy sector. This data, compiled by financial provider Wind, reflects activity through the Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor (QFII) scheme, distinct from the Stock Connect program.
The surge in foreign investment into China’s onshore stocks, specifically a 33 percent increase in QFII holdings to US$40.6 billion by June, points to a targeted interest in China’s AI hardware and green energy sectors. This move by global fund managers, often seen as "smart money" by individual Chinese investors, suggests a belief in the long-term growth potential of these strategic industries despite broader market uncertainties. The significant jump in value, 87 percent, indicates not just increased capital inflow but also appreciation in the underlying assets. For Asia's tech landscape, this reflects a continued, albeit selective, confidence in China's innovation capabilities, particularly in areas critical for future economic growth. The focus on AI supply chain companies could mean increased capital for Chinese chipmakers, component manufacturers, and related tech firms, potentially bolstering their R&D and production capacities. However, the reliance on QFII data, which is separate from the more widely used Stock Connect, means this represents a specific segment of foreign capital, and its broader impact on the overall market sentiment needs to be watched.
