Lachy Groom backs Indian startup aiming to keep aircraft aloft for a year
Indian startup Alteon, founded by 20-year-old Samay Sanghvi, has secured $2.5 million in pre-seed funding. Prominent solo investor Lachy Groom led the round, with participation from Together Fund. Alteon aims to develop autonomous aircraft capable of remaining airborne for over a year by harvesting energy from ocean winds, a technique inspired by dynamic soaring. The initial plan involves building a 3-meter-wingspan aircraft for maritime surveillance. The company recently completed a test flight over the Bay of Bengal, where an aircraft autonomously completed seven O-shaped cycles at over 62 miles per hour.
Alteon's $2.5 million pre-seed round, led by Lachy Groom, underscores the high-risk, high-reward nature of deep tech investments in India. The startup's ambition to keep aircraft aloft for a year using dynamic soaring is a significant engineering challenge, as noted by aerospace experts Dr. Gabriel Bousquet and Dr. Bharath Swaminathan. While the recent autonomous flight test over the Bay of Bengal is a promising first step, achieving energy-neutral dynamic soaring in real-world conditions, especially at low altitudes, presents substantial hurdles related to turbulence and environmental factors. For India, this development points to a growing appetite for funding ventures tackling fundamental scientific and engineering problems, moving beyond conventional software startups. The initial application in maritime surveillance could offer new capabilities for government agencies in the region, potentially enhancing real-time visibility and security across vast ocean territories. However, the technical feasibility of sustained flight remains the critical factor to watch, as the underlying physics, while established, faces complex practical implementation challenges.
